This week, the children definitely enjoyed a highlight for the Japanese unit: sumo wrestlers visiting the ELC! They were very excited to go upstairs with the other children at school to watch them stretch, and practice wrestling each other, demonstrating various styles which Teacher Hisako explained.
Then, it was the children's turn to go up against a wrestler. As they had been practicing with Teacher Hisako in the weeks leading up to the event, many of them felt confident and ever-so-ready to test their strength and use their muscles!

We took so many photos of the fun, so please enjoy the slideshow (below)!

More Clay!
This week, the second group of Nursery friends got to enjoy the process of using potter's clay to make their own bowls. They used the plans they had designed and listened to and watched Teacher Rika very carefully so they could be sure to create their bowls the way they would like. The children enjoyed using different colored clay to accent their bowls. We were very impressed with their skill and concentration and look forward to seeing the bowls after they have been 'baked' in the big oven at the pottery studio. Well done, Nursery friends.
Cooking: Miso Soup
As the children have enjoyed various activities during our Japanese unit, they have also shown an interest in Japanese food. Several friends were interested in making miso soup so they were able to join Teacher Natalie in combining the ingredients: miso paste, wakame (seaweed), and tofu. Before they cooked the ingredients, they were able to touch, smell, and taste them. Many friends thought the miso paste tasted like soy sauce. Other friends were excited to eat tofu and were sure to pile it in their bowls when they served themselves. As they ate their miso soup, they said it was, "yummy", "delicious" and "tasty". Many even asked for seconds. Thank you to our little helpers for our wonderful culinary delight!
Thank you for a short but fabulous week. Enjoy the mid-winter break and see you all next week!
